When You Feel Close to God One Day... and Distant the Next

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you."

Have you ever found yourself wondering, "Why don't I feel as close to God as I used to?" One day you're excited to open your Bible, prayer comes naturally, and you feel like you can hear His voice so clearly. Then life gets busy. Your routine changes. You miss one day with Him, then another, and before you know it, you're wondering if God somehow moved away.

If that's where you are today, I want to encourage you with one simple truth: God didn't move.

Sometimes we mistake a lack of consistency for a lack of God's presence. We think because we don't feel close to Him, He must be far away. But God's nearness has never depended on your emotions it has always depended on His faithfulness. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Even when your schedule changes or your heart feels distracted, His invitation to come near has never changed.

The truth is, spiritual drift rarely happens overnight. Most of us don't wake up one morning and decide we no longer want a relationship with God. It usually happens one small decision at a time. "I'll read my Bible tomorrow." "I'll pray later." "I'm just too tired today." Before long, what started as a busy week quietly turns into a season of distance. Not because God walked away, but because life became louder than His voice.

One of my favorite stories is about Mary and Martha. Martha wasn't doing anything wrong she was serving, preparing, and taking care of responsibilities. But Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet. Jesus wasn't saying serving didn't matter. He was reminding us that nothing should replace simply being with Him. You can serve in ministry, raise a family, build a business, and still neglect your own relationship with the Father if you're not careful.

That's why James 4:8 is so comforting. It doesn't say, "Get your life together first." It simply says, "Draw near to God." God isn't asking you to be perfect before you come back to Him. He's simply asking you to come. Open your Bible, even if it's only for ten minutes. Whisper a prayer, even if all you can say is, "Lord, I miss You." Worship Him while you're folding laundry or driving to work. Invite Him into the ordinary moments of your day. You'll discover that He's been waiting for you all along.

This week, I want to challenge you to set aside just 15 uninterrupted minutes each day to spend with God. Put your phone down. Turn off the notifications. Don't worry about reading several chapters or checking something off a list. Simply spend time with your Father. Consistency will always produce more fruit than striving for perfection.

As you go through your week, ask yourself this question: What has been competing for my attention more than God's presence? Be honest with the Lord. Maybe it's busyness, social media, worry, or simply exhaustion. Whatever it is, surrender it to Him and make room for Him again. Spiritual growth isn't built in one extraordinary moment; it's built in thousands of ordinary moments of saying "yes" to Jesus.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You never leave me, even when I become distracted. Forgive me for the times I've allowed busyness, worry, and the demands of life to crowd out time with You. Create in me a deeper hunger for Your Word and a greater desire to sit in Your presence. Teach me to choose You before my schedule, my to-do list, or the noise around me. Draw my heart closer to Yours each day and help me build a relationship with You that is rooted in faithfulness, not just feelings. In Jesus' name, Amen.

You don't have to earn your way back Jesus has been inviting you all along. One moment in His presence can begin to change everything.
